A little bit about me
Hello, my name is Paulo Olim and i’m a 27 year old UX/UI Designer. I am a creative person that likes to see the world from a different perspective.
I have a degree and a masters degree. So I studied hard for 5 years to help me understand the design process and how to benefit from it.
I have a Degree in Design and Interactive Media taken in University of Madeira, base on 3 areas in my degree were: design, technology and psychology, which was focused on the ability to forge a fundamental combination of key aspects to be successful in the creative process. The goal of the masters was to evaluate design issues and their products, in a critical way, by contextualising historically and sociologically it’s innovative aspects.
I also have a Masters in Multimedia taken in University of Porto, focused on providing skills to design and implement systems and multimedia applications, so that we are able to innovate in the design of new products, processes and services based on emerging technologies.
In the last 3 years I worked across 2 different countries in 4 companies, on a wide range of projects as well as freelance and some work for friends.
As to my professional career, I started as a design generalist (jumping between graphic design and UI/UX), designing brands, packaging and websites as well as composing images for marketing purposes. Along the way I realised that what I really loved about design was designing for people, to help people. So I started to follow through a more specific UI/UX path.
The design perspective
From a design perspective the world seems to go back and forward in time. New design trends having a go and old ones coming back. Design trends that stay are the ones that are both simple, user friendly and quickly identifiable. Our perspective of what either is a good or bad design changes over time, but we are always able to improve and iterate with it, we have to keep in mind that need to design things for the end user and not for ourselves, for me that’s the essence of a great design.
“Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent.”
Good design is not only just how it looks. It needs to perform, convert, astonish, and fulfil its purpose.
Develop skills is a must to grow as a designer and as an individual. I enjoy paying attention to details and focus on the essential aspects of the design.
“Less is more!”
Less, but better, because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products/designs are not burdened with the non-essentials. To do that we have to go back to the purity and back to simplicity.
The innovation possibilities.
The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for an exciting and innovative design, to invent and reinvent things that can change the world or the way we think of it.
Exercise is a must for me. Keeps my mind in control of my body.
I love to travel and whenever I can I travel to be in touch with new cultures and have new experiences.
Photography is one of my main hobbies. It’s the only way we can actually freeze a moment in time.
Read, watch and learn! I always look for new tutorials and new things to learn. There is always so much to learn and always so little time.
Reading books is one of the ways I found to relax and at the same time fill the gaps in my English.
Music keeps the spirit high. It’s one of the must have when I’m working on something.
